RESOLUTION 01/7-6
CALIFORNIA CONGRESS OF REPUBLICANS
Board of Directors

PROPOSED FUEL TAX RESOLUTION
Resolution Adopted July 29, 2001 by
The California Congress Of Republicans Board Of Directors

WHEREAS California motorists pay a substantial fuel tax to build and maintain the state roadway and highway system, AND

WHEREAS California's motorists pay this fuel tax willingly, in the belief that the tax is being used for the purpose for which it is being collected, AND

WHEREAS The State Legislature frequently diverts fuel tax monies from the roadway and highway fund to be used for other purposes, AND

WHEREAS The diversion of these highway funds has created a backlog of new road construction and maintenance of the existing system, AND

WHEREAS Predicted growth of California's population in the years to come points out that there is a critical need to catch up on the maintenance of our roadway and highway system to prepare for the future, or suffer severe consequences, AND

WHEREAS To catch up with our current roadway and highway needs and to build for the future, the diversion of fuel tax funds must be brought to a halt and the fuel taxes held in trust for the purposes for which they are collected,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED That the California Congress of Republicans advise the State Legislature of its concerns over the future of California's highway infrastructure, AND

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That the California Congress of Republicans announce its support of a proposed Constitutional Amendment by the Republican Members of the State Legislature, mandating that the State Fuel Tax be placed in a dedicated fund to be used solely for roadway, highway and transit construction and maintenance, AND

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That this Resolution be presented as a Resolution of this body at the next California Republican Party Convention for their consideration and adoption and place a copy of this Resolution in the official CCR Book of Resolutions.
